Transformation

Dear You,

This morning I stood in front of my window watching the rain fall onto the abundance of leaves in my backyard. I asked my husband over the weekend if we should rake the yard. It was a brisk morning, one of my favorite times to work outside. He sent me a NY Times article that argues against raking leaves. Personally, I think he was relieved as he was quite comfortable enjoying his morning indoors and was happy to find some evidence against putting on his boots to do an outdoor chore.

The Times article argues against raking leaves due to the incredibly rich ecosystem it creates. The layers of leaves and insects work to create a decomposition of rich organic material that goes back into the soil. As I watched the rain dance on the fallen leaves, I thought about the ingredients required to create this rich soil; all the pieces that need to fall in place. Too much rain and the yard becomes a mud pit, but too dry then there’s risk for fire. Not enough insects to break down the leaves then the leaves will be there come spring shading the potential for fresh grass.

There’s a symbiotic relationship to nature and its wonders. I think about how this translates to our own human evolution-the ingredients necessary to support us on our own growth and discovery paths. What ingredients support you in being you? Do you feel like something is missing? Or that things aren’t balanced? Are you wishing for more of something? Or wishing there was less of something and more of something else in your life?
